SUMMARY OF LESSONS 14-18
LESSON FOURTEEN (14)
TOPIC: RECIPROCATE GOD’S LOVE
BIBLE PASSAGE: Deut.6 5; Mark 12:30; Isaiah 49:8-10
MEMORY VERSE:
Deut.6:5 “And thou shalt love the LORD thy
God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul,
and with all thy might”.
INTRODUCTION: To reciprocate means to “give in return”, to “respond”, to “give back”, or to “reply”. In the context of Biblical love (agape love), reciprocation is a necessity else genuine love does not exist in the relationship. However, before we can reciprocate God’s love, we need to have an understanding of His love. The love of God is the unconditional affection of God towards mankind. Most importantly, it is the kind of love that can only be exhibited by God Himself. No man in the natural descent can love like God. The love of God is one of the characteristic natures of God that makes Him greater than every other god.
STUDY GUIDE:
A. What does it mean to reciprocate God’s love?
To reciprocate God’s love simply means to love God back the way we should with the understanding of his ability in us. God’s love can never be reciprocated carnally because a carnal love would always be faulty. God’s love is divine.
B. How to reciprocate God’s love?
1. By accepting His love. We must reciprocate this amazing love that God has shown us and just give Him a place in our hearts! John 1:12
2. By keeping His commandments – John 14:15, 21,23.
3. By living for God. Gal 2:20. Living a life sold out in total surrender to the one who loves us more than we love ourselves -2 Cor 5:14-1
4. By showing love to those He loves, having at heart that it was out of love for His children that He allowed Himself to be crucified – Eph.5:2, 4:2; 1 John 3:16.
5 By giving – John 3:16. For God so loved, He gave. We reciprocate His love by giving to Him. Giving Him our resources, ability, talent, time, etc. Spending time with the one who loves us is another way to reciprocate His love – Matt 25:35-40
6. By letting his love constrain/restrain us. 2 Cor 5:14-15
7. Letting other people know about His love. Preaching the Gospel – John 21:15-17
8. Through worship – Ps. 29:2
INVITATION/APPLICATION: God showed His love to us while we were sinners by giving up His only begotten Son. He doesn’t ask for any other
thing from us than to reciprocate this love. Get your mind together and fellowship, give, obey and consecrate yourself more.
CONCLUSION: Always know that God has given you the ability to love Him the more. You can always pray to God to help you love Him the more. Phil. 1:9-10.
LESSON FIFTEEN (15)
TOPIC: BE OBEDIENT TO GOD
BIBLE TEXT: John 14:15-21
MEMORY VERSE: John 14:15 “If you love me, keep my commandments”
INTRODUCTION: Obedience simply means compliance with an order, request, or law or submission to another’s authority. Every organization or group has set laws by which they are guided to allow for peaceful cohabitation and also help achieve their common goal. Obedience to God entails aligning our will to God’s will; doing what God has asked us to do. It
is when we completely surrender to His authority and base our decisions and our actions on His Word.
STUDY GUIDE:
A. How can I be obedient to God?
You can begin to ponder on today’s topic on how exactly to obey God.
i. Read, study and meditate on the word -Jos. 1:8
ii. Obey the Word of God – the Word of God is His love letter to His children; in it we have the key to access everything that Jesus got for us through His death on the cross. Thus, we must be the doer of the Word -James 1:22-25
iii. Praying to God to help you stay obedient to Him-1 Thess. 5:17
*B. Examples of people that obeyed God in the Bible;
– Abraham – Genesis 12:1-4;7
– Joseph – Genesis 39:9
– Moses – Exodus 7:6
– Joshua – Joshua 11:15
– Jesus – John 4:34
INVITATION/APPLICATION: According to Solomon in Eccl 12:13, the whole duty of man is to keep God’s command which is obedience. If you are living a life disobedience, you are not fulfilling the purpose for which God created you.
To fulfill purpose and give your life a meaning, it starts with obeying the Almighty God and accepting Him as your Lord and personal
Saviour.
CONCLUSION: To obey is better than sacrifice. Obey God’s word completely and you will enjoy the peace of Lord that passes understanding
and other blessings that goes along with obedience – Deut. 28:1-14.
LESSON SIXTEEN (16)
TOPIC: BEAR FRUITS OF REPENTANCE
BIBLE TEXT: Luke 3:3-14
MEMORY VERSE: Luke 3:8 “Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance and begin not to say within yourselves, we have Abraham to our father; for i say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
INTRODUCTION: Being contrite and sorry for doing wrong isn’t sin consciousness. The born again man in his spirit finds sin repulsive. Saying you are sorry and admitting you sinned isn’t doubting the finished work of redemption rather, feeling condemned is. We judge ourselves and when we are wrong, we admit it. We try not to deny the right standing we have with God which is without works. Repentance entails more than mere remorse for one’s past conduct. It requires a change of life.
STUDY GUIDE
A. What is Repentance?
1. A feeling of regret or remorse for doing wrong or sinning- Acts 2:37
2. Repentance entails a resolve to cease the wrongful conduct replacing it with godly living -Acts 2:38
3. It is the ongoing and living decision to choose Christ and live for Him; even more so to allow Him to live in us.
Repentance is not a one-time thing where we tell God that we’re sorry we committed this or that, only to repeat it tomorrow and the day after. It is a continuous effort to live a life that pleases God.
B. Fruits of Repentance. Matt 7:16-20, 2 Cor 7:8-11
The fruits of repentance include:
i. Godly sorrow – 2 Cor. 7:10
ii. Brokenness – Ps. 34:18,51:17
iii. Acknowledgement of your sin – 1 John 1:7-9
iv. Genuine decision – John 8:11
v. A life characterized by a consistent and persistent pursuit of living a Godly life in Christ – 2 Cor 5:17; James 3:18; Heb 12:10-11
vi. A change in desires that is geared towards Christ-likeness – Rom 6:22
vii. Fruit of the Spirit – Gal 5:22-23, Eph 5:9
viii. Showing the kind of fruit (or lifestyle) that inevitably grows on the tree of repentance – Luke 3:10-14
ix. When a person turns to rely on God’s mercy, he can no longer hate his neighbor, You cannot cherish the mercy God has shown to us and at the same time refuse to show it to another.
C. How to Bear Fruit of Repentance;
1. Renewing your mind with the Word of God – Rom 12:1-2
2. Living/Walking in the Spirit – Gal. 5:16
3. Total reliance on God- Phil 1:11
GROUP DISCUSSIONS: What areas have I shown remorse but not changed ? In what ways have I wronged another person? What can I do to amend the wrong done? How can I show I am sorry without being hypocritical?
INVITATION/APPLICATION: The fruit of repentance is non-negotiable for the believer. Anyone who claims he is a believer must bear these fruits. Do not find excuses for making wrongs neither should you justify whatever
you have done wrong. Always let the Holy Spirit minister to you. Give attention to His voice whenever He points your attention to what you have done wrong. Let Godly sorrow have its way in you. This will lead to brokenness, then you will end up acknowledging the sin, in turn, you will
apologize and stop doing it.
CONCLUSION: What the fruit of repentance does for you essentially is that, it helps you have a clear conscience towards God. Many people worship God out of condemnation and fear because of what they have done wrong but God beckons on whosoever does any wrong to come back to Him and be restored (Isaiah 55:1-2). Repentance leads to the salvation of your soul
from condemnation. Always remember that God loves you no matter what.
LESSON SEVENTEEN (17)
TOPIC: BEAR FRUITS OF CHARACTER
BIBLE TEXT: Galatians 5:22-23
MEMORY VERSE: Matthew 7:19-20 “Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them”.
INTRODUCTION: If you have a tree that is mature but doesn’t bear fruits for about 5 years, after a while you will consider cutting it down because it is merely occupying space. As children of God, we must bear fruits of
character being examples of believers indeed, wherever we are. We are the epistle read of all men – 2 Corinthians 3:2.
STUDY GUIDE:
A. What does it mean to bear Fruits? It means to produce fruits after its own kind. You can’t plant yam and expect to harvest pineapple, never, the same way a cow can’t give birth to a monkey.
B. What are the fruits of Character? They are the fruits of the regenerated human spirit. Characters that should be manifested by the new man in Christ – Gal. 5:22-23
Fruit of the spirit include;
•Love
•Joy
•Peace
•Longsuffering
•Kindness
•Faithfulness
•Gentleness
C. How can bear fruits of Character?
These fruits of character won’t manifest by default but as we allow the workings of the Holy Spirit in us through the following medium;
i. Abiding in Christ -John 15:1-5
ii. Meditate on the Word -Joshua 1:8
iii. Prayers – Luke 18:1; 1 Thess. 5:17
iv. Regular study of the Word – Prov 4:20-22
INVITATION/APPLICATION: To bear fruits you have to be connected to the vine – John 15:5. Fellowship with God in His word and prayer, to grow and bear fruits of character. Love is key and God is love, so receive His love then you can now bear fruits of righteousness.
CONCLUSION: You have the capacity to love like God, you are expected to bear fruits of righteousness, bearing fruits of character is visible as you grow in your walk with God.
LESSON EIGHTEEN (18)
TOPIC: BE HIS DISCIPLE
BIBLE TEXT: Matt. 4:18-19
MEMORY VERSE:
John 13:35 “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another”
INTRODUCTION: You need to know that as a child of God, you are to look like Him, become like Him, then act like Him, the capacity for that is in our Spirit but we need to do it actively. We may not able to appropriate all that Jesus did for us to enjoy if we don’t follow closely, so let’s dive in and explore the richness in God’s Word.
STUDY GUIDE:
A. Who is a Disciple? A disciple is a follower of someone, in this case a disciple is a dedicated follower of Jesus. From our Bible text, we saw Jesus call men to follow Him. As a teenager you are to constantly engage in learning Christ.
B. How can l be a Disciple of Jesus?
1. You must be a child of God, be born again.
2. Study and meditate on the Word of God – Joshua 1:8; 2 Tim. 2:15
3. Be a man of prayer – Luke 18:1
4. Stay full of the Holy Ghost – Eph 5:18-20
5. Follow men of God – 1 Cor 11:1
DISCUSS: What are those things that can discourage an average teenager from being a disciple?
INVITATION/APPLICATION: Today various celebrities and people of great personalities have followers who love and adore them. Their followers do everything possible to be like them, to the extent of talking like them, dressing like them, having their ideology etc. which, we as believers ought to be. The disciples were easily identified as followers of Christ as a result of the
similarities between them and Jesus Christ.
You can’t be a disciple if you have not confessed Jesus as your your Lord and personal Saviour. Be intentional about learning and increasing in the knowledge of God. You need to follow Him closely to be established in the faith.
CONCLUSION: Make a decision to preach to people around you everyday so that they can also be like Jesus. God wants the church; you and me to mature, we can only mature as we learn Christ – Matt 28:18-20.
