The topic of today’s sermon is “Love Your Neighbor”.

As we read in Matthew 22:39, Jesus tells us that the greatest commandment is to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” And the second is like it: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

³⁹ And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

But what does it mean to truly love our neighbor? It’s easy to say that we love our neighbor, but do we really put that love into action?

To love our neighbor is to see them as a fellow human being, created in the image of God, just like us. It means treating them with kindness and respect, regardless of their race, religion, or socioeconomic status. It means recognizing that every person has value and worth.

Love is an action, not just a feeling. It’s easy to love those who are like us, who think like us, who look like us. But true love is loving those who are different from us. It’s loving those who we may disagree with, those who may have hurt us, and those who may be difficult to love.

Loving our neighbor also means standing up for them when they are mistreated or oppressed. It means speaking out against injustice and fighting for equality.

In John 13:34-35, Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Let us strive to love our neighbor as ourselves. Let us put love into action and be known as followers of Jesus.

Another aspect of loving our neighbor is to love them selflessly. Often times, we may love others with the intention of receiving something in return. We may expect a thank you, a favor, or even a reward for our love and kindness.

But true love is selfless. It is giving without expecting anything in return. It is loving someone simply because they are human and deserve to be loved.

Loving our neighbor also means being there for them in times of need. It means offering a helping hand, a listening ear, or a shoulder to cry on. It means being a friend, even when it is hard.

In Matthew 25:40, Jesus says, “whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” When we love and serve our neighbors, we are also loving and serving Jesus.

In conclusion, loving our neighbor is a commandment given to us by Jesus. It means treating others with kindness and respect, standing up for justice, and loving selflessly. It means putting love into action and being a true follower of Jesus. Let us strive to love our neighbor as ourselves and to put love into action every day. Amen.

Let us pray: Dear Lord, help us to love our neighbors as ourselves. Help us to see the value and worth in every person, regardless of their differences. Give us the courage to stand up for justice and to love those who may be difficult to love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
