SUB-THEME: THREATS AND OBSTACLES TO HOLY LIVING.
TOPIC: LEGALISM.
TEXT: ROMANS 10:1-4.
1. Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved.
2. For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge.
3. Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness.
4. Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.
TOPIC: LEGALISM.
MESSAGE:
Man is saved by grace and grace alone, and not of his effort. Consequently, he is made holy through his union with Christ. However, the human nature is always tilted towards earning favour with God through works, which is legalism. The Jews tried to make themselves acceptable to God by following some set of rules. For example, the washing of hands before meal and circumcision. Today, some teach that those who wear jewellery will not enter God’s kingdom. You cannot attain holiness through doing or not doing some things. For no amount of human effort can make man acceptable to God. You must come to God on His terms, which is faith in Him through Jesus Christ. Do not allow anyone confuse you.
REFLECTION:
Holiness is not earned through works.
PRAYER:
Thank you Lord for making me holy through Christ. Amen.
MEMORY VERSE FOR THE MONTH: ISAIAH 35:8.
And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness. The unclean will not journey on it; it will be for those who walk in that Way; wicked fools will not go about on it.
