SUB-THEME: SEEK THE PEACE OF THE LAND.
TOPIC: SEEK THE PEACE OF THE LAND.
TEXT: JEREMIAH 29: 4-9.
4 “This is what the LORD of the Heavenly Armies, the God of Israel, says to all the exiles who were taken from Jerusalem into exile to Babylon, [Eph 5:6]
5 ‘Build houses and live in them. Plant gardens and eat their produce.
6 Take wives and father sons and daughters. Take wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so they may have sons and daughters. Increase in numbers there, don’t decrease.
7 Seek the welfare of the city to which I’ve exiled you and pray to the LORD for it, for your welfare depends on its welfare.’ [1Ti 2:2]
8 For this is what the LORD of the Heavenly Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘Don’t let the prophets and diviners who are among you deceive you, and don’t listen to them when they tell you their dreams. Jer 14:14 Jer 23:31 Jer 27:15 [Jer 27:14] [Mat 24:4] [Mar 13:5] [Luk 21:8] [Col 2:18] [2Th 2:2] [Heb 13:9] [1Jn 4:1]
9 Indeed, they’re prophesying lies to you in my name. I didn’t send them,’ declares the LORD.
MESSAGE:
Peace is not automatic, but has to be sought after consciously and with every effort. However, many people passively want peace, but are not actively seeking after it. Today’s passage instructs the Israelites in Babylon not to despair but to build houses and settle down, plant gardens, marry and have children, and to seek the peace and prosperity of every city they were living in.
Today, many people are displaced due to one crisis or another. The temptation is for them to be indifferent of any peace and development efforts of their host communities. Scripture admonishes us to be involved in every effort towards peace and development of our abodes.
Have you been displaced and/or not living in your native land?
Seek its peace and flourish there.
REFLECTION:
Seek the peace of the place of your residence.
PRAYER:
Lord that I may contribute to the peace and prosperity of my neighbourhood. Amen.
