PART TWO: COMMENTARY ON DAY 22 – BE YE HOLY

The Call to Holiness

Day 22 of the RCCG fasting and prayers turns our attention to a foundational but often neglected aspect of the Christian life: holiness. In a world that celebrates compromise and tolerates impurity, God calls His people to a different standard.

The theme scripture, 1 Thessalonians 4:7, states it plainly: “For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.” The call of God is not just a call to salvation; it is a call to separation. It is not just a call to forgiveness; it is a call to purity. It is not just a call to heaven; it is a call to holiness on earth.

Psalm 47:8 reminds us that God reigns from a “holy throne.” His sovereignty is exercised from a seat of absolute purity. If we are to relate to this God, we must align with His nature. “Be holy, for I am holy” (1 Peter 1:16) is not a suggestion but a command.

The Foundation: Thanksgiving

The first four prayer points establish a foundation of gratitude. Before we ask for cleansing, we thank God for what He has already done:

  • Thanksgiving for salvation – John 3:16 reminds us that God’s love initiated our redemption. We did not earn it; He gave it.
  • Thanksgiving for forgiveness – Psalm 85:2 celebrates God’s willingness to pardon our iniquity. He does not hold our past against us.
  • Thanksgiving for healing – Psalm 103:3 declares that God heals all our diseases. Physical wholeness is part of His provision.
  • Thanksgiving for cleansing – 1 John 1:7 assures us that the blood of Jesus continually cleanses us from all sin.

This posture of gratitude is essential. We do not approach God with a list of demands but with hearts full of praise for what He has already done.

The Scope of Cleansing

The prayers then expand in concentric circles:

Personal and Family Cleansing (Point 5)
“Cleanse my family from every form of defilement – soul, spirit, and body.” This prayer acknowledges that defilement can affect every dimension of our being. The soul (mind, will, emotions), the spirit (our innermost being), and the body (physical actions and habits) all need purification. Families are the primary units of society; when families are holy, the nation can be transformed.

National Cleansing (Points 6-9)
The prayers move from the personal to the corporate, addressing the nation:

  • Corrupt tendencies in businesses and politics – Joel 3:21 speaks of God avenging bloodshed and cleansing what has been defiled. Corruption is a national sin that requires national repentance.
  • Idolatry and its altars – 2 Chronicles 34:8 records King Josiah’s purge of idolatrous altars. Spiritual pollution often has physical manifestations. Destroying altars is both a spiritual and symbolic act.
  • Openness and fairness in the economy – A holy nation conducts its business with transparency and justice.
  • Integrity and equality in politics – Leaders who fear God govern with integrity and treat all citizens equally.

The Church’s Role (Points 10-15)
The prayers culminate with a focus on the Church, because national transformation begins with ecclesiastical renewal:

  • Holiness flowing from the church – Isaiah 11:9 promises that the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord as water covers the sea. This flow begins with a holy church.
  • Purging hypocrisy – The greatest enemy of the church is not external persecution but internal hypocrisy. When our lives match our lips, the world takes notice.
  • Hearts of stone removed – Isaiah 6:7 describes the prophet’s lips being touched with a live coal, purging his sin. Hebrews 12:1 urges us to lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily besets us. Both scriptures point to the need for divine intervention in our sanctification.
  • Purged altars – Every RCCG parish worldwide is covered in prayer, that their altars remain undefiled and pure.
  • Righteous offerings – Malachi 3:3 speaks of the Lord purifying the sons of Levi so that they may offer righteous offerings. Our worship is acceptable only when our lives are holy.
  • Grace to obey – Ultimately, holiness requires grace. We cannot achieve it by human effort alone. We need divine enablement to make holiness our standard.

The Connection to the Throne

Psalm 47:8 declares that God sits on His holy throne. His throne is holy because He is holy. When we pursue holiness, we are preparing ourselves to approach that throne with confidence. The pure in heart shall see God (Matthew 5:8).

Practical Application

As you pray through these points today:

  1. Examine yourself honestly – Where have you tolerated impurity? Where has compromise crept in? Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal hidden sins.

  2. Confess specifically – General confession is vague; specific confession is powerful. Name your sins before God and receive His cleansing.

  3. Renounce defilement – Actively renounce any involvement with occult practices, idolatry, or sinful habits, whether personal or generational.

  4. Intercede for others – Pray for your family members, your church leaders, your nation’s politicians, and your fellow citizens.

  5. Ask for grace – Holiness is not achieved by willpower alone. Ask God for the grace to live a holy life consistently.

PART THREE: DECLARATIONS FOR DAY 22

  • I DECLARE that God has not called me to impurity but to holiness.
  • I DECLARE that I am cleansed by the blood of Jesus from all sin.
  • I DECLARE that my family is purified from every form of defilement—soul, spirit, and body.
  • I DECLARE that my nation is cleansed from corruption, idolatry, and injustice.
  • I DECLARE that openness and fairness characterise our economy.
  • I DECLARE that integrity and equality mark our politics.
  • I DECLARE that holiness flows from the church and covers the earth.
  • I DECLARE that hypocrisy is purged from God’s people.
  • I DECLARE that hearts of stone are replaced with hearts of flesh.
  • I DECLARE that every defiled altar is purified.
  • I DECLARE that I offer righteous offerings to God.
  • I DECLARE that grace to obey is released, and holiness becomes my standard.

PART FOUR: CLOSING PRAYER

Father, we thank You for Your sacrificial love that brought us salvation. We thank You for forgiving our iniquities and healing our diseases. We thank You for the blood of Jesus that continually cleanses us from all sin.

Today, we ask for cleansing. Cleanse our families. Cleanse our nation. Cleanse Your church. Let holiness flow from Your people and cover the earth.

Purge us from hypocrisy. Remove our hearts of stone. Purify our altars. Make our offerings righteous in Your sight. Release the grace we need to obey completely.

We declare that we are called to holiness, and by Your grace, we will walk in it.

In Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
