BIBLE TEXT: NAHUM 1:1-15
[1]The burden of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
[2]God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies.
[3]The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
[4]He rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers: Bashan languisheth, and Carmel, and the flower of Lebanon languisheth.
[5]The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein.
MEMORY VERSE: Proverbs 8:13 “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogance, and the evil way, and the forward mouth, do I hate.”
LESSON AIM:
The children will learn that a person who has placed his faith in Jesus is safe from God’s promised punishment and judgment upon sin.
CHILD RELATED TRUTH: Without faith in Jesus nothing can protect you from God’s punishment for your sin.
INTRODUCTION: Proverbs 8:13 says that let those who love the Lord hate evil. The Bible also describes Joseph as strong and handsome. God
gave him great leadership skills and other blessings. After a while, Potiphar’s wife noticed Joseph. One day she asked him to act as her
boyfriend. Joseph knew that being a boyfriend to another man’s wife was a sin against God. Joseph had complete control over everything in
Potiphar’s household except, for one thing, Potiphar’s wife. Joseph was content with all that God had blessed him with. He was humble. He did not think he deserved more than God had given him. God gave Joseph the power to say no to sin.
PROGRESSION OF EVENTS:
1. One hundred years after God’s prophet Jonah went to Nineveh, God sent another prophet, Nahum with a message.
2. Unfortunately, the people of Nineveh returned to their sinful ways.
3. God must punish His enemies but He is slow to anger. (Nahum 1:2-3).
GOSPEL CONNECTION: Every person is either an enemy of God or His friend. Because we are born sinners we all are His enemy. Our sin
separates us from God. Sin must be punished. God has made a way for our sins to be forgiven through His Son Jesus. Jesus came to this earth
and lived a sinless life. He was nailed to the cross and God punished Him for all the sins of every person. Jesus suffered and died in your
place. He was buried and rose again on the third day. When you believe by faith Jesus died in your place, your status changes from an enemy of God to a friend of God.
4. The people of Nineveh were enemies to God’s people.
5. Nahum’s message to Nineveh (Assyria) was not comforting
6. It was very bad news for the Assyrians who chose to sin even after experiencing God’s kindness and forgiveness when they repented at
Jonah’s message.
7. Nahum told Assyria that God was going to punish them and destroy them for their wickedness.
CLIMAX: God’s people were seeing terrible things happening around them but God said He would keep those who trust in Him safe.
CONCLUSION: God said that He would punish Assyria for their wickedness and even though it didn’t happen right away, He did everything He said He would do. Assyria was destroyed.
CHALLENGE: When you become a friend of God that doesn’t mean bad things will not happen in your life. Until Jesus returns and destroys the
wickedness in this world you will experience difficulties. Sometimes the difficulty is because of a sinful choice you made and as a child of God He will use difficulty to discipline you. The difficulty should cause you to .repent and turn away from our sins and walk closely with Jesus.
Sometimes bad things happen not because you have sinned but because of others. God will protect you and help you no matter what difficulty you experience. He will comfort you when you are sad, give you peace when you are scared, and give you strength when you have no courage.
INVITATION: The only way you can hate evil is to put your trust in the Lord Jesus and be saved (John 1:12).
