LESSON TWENTY-SEVEN (27)
TOPIC: BRIDGING PARENT-CHILD GAP
BIBLE PASSAGE: Psalms 127:1-5.
MEMORY VERSE: “For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him”. Genesis 18:19.
LESSON INTRODUCTION: Parenting refers to the aspect of raising a child from infancy to adulthood. The most common partaker is the biological parent of the child. Parenting in the 21St century involves parent-child relationship. The parent-child relationship must be based on love, truth, openness, honour, obedience, discipline and provision. Parenting can be difficult and challenging, but at the same time the most rewarding and fulfilling things we ever do. The Bible has a great deal to say about the way we can successfully raise our children to be great men and women of God. It is easier to train a child than to repair an adult.
LESSON OUTLINES:
LESSON OUTLINE 1: PARENTING: OLD AND
MODERN
A. PARENTING AS OF OLD:
i. Teacher should group the class into two (2) groups.
ii. Group one should mention those things their children indicate that some parents are negligent in upbringing their children.
iii. Group two should mention those things that which indicate that some parents have performed their duties well in upbringing of their children.
iv. Teacher should explain the role played by the parents of Jesus (Mary and Joseph) to
protect baby Jesus according to Matthew
2:13-15.
v. Teacher should explain the role played by
Mary and Joseph to ensure that baby Jesus
grew in the knowledge of God according to
Luke 2:22-24, 41-42.
vi. Teacher should allow the students to identify the role played by Eli in the upbringing his sons, Hophni and Phinehas according
to 1 Samuel 4:13-21.
B. MODERN PARENTING:
i. Teacher should allow students to identify
dominant factors which influence parenting whether positively or negatively in our modern society.
ii. Teacher should carefully identify those practices and developments which have influenced parenting in our modern society as
indicated below:
*a. Indulgence*: e. g “My child should not suf-
fer as I did”.
*b. Negligence of duty*: for instance, some parents abdicate their responsibilities for
house maid, teachers and electronic gadgets.
*c. Wrong Priority*: for instances some parents place their careers above their children care.
d. Adverse effects of communication technologies expose the child to unwholesome
practices.
CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Students should differentiate between the old and modern parenting pointing out the dangers in the gap.
LESSON OUTLINE 2: DIVINE EXPECTATION
Teacher should use the lecture teaching method to deliver the Outline 2 (to save time).
To bridge the gap between the biblical pattern and the modern pattern of parenting, the
following biblical principles could applied:
<-[if IsupportLists]->i. <l-(endifl-> *Apply the rod of correction (Prov.22:15)*. This is not the rod of abuse, but correction. An abused child will suffer great trauma, but a child who is properly corrected will enjoy peace.
<-[if supportLists]->ii. <l-[endif]- >*Discipline promptly (Prov.13:24)*. Discipline has to do with understanding that various ways of correcting wrong doing with the goal of inculcating the confidence to do right always. A parent does not love his child if he fails to apply the rod when necessary (Prov.23:13-14; 29:15-17).
<l-[if supportLists]->ii. <-[endif]->*Begin training early (Prov.19:18)*. Many lives have been ruined due to the negligence of some parents by excusing or over looking the wrong doings of their children instead of correcting them early.
<-[if supportLists]->iv. <-[endif]->*Be a role model. (2 Tim.1:5).*
<!-[if IsupportListsl->v. <l-[endif]-> *Teach them the word of God. (Deut.6:6-7)*.

Ruth 2:11
INTRODUCTION: Christian couples are expected to live according to the dictates of God’s word. For instance, the Bible tells us that a man should leave his parents and cleave to his wife (Genesis 2:24). This shows that a line must be drawn between the families from which both partners originated from and the new family the couple is building. However, the Bible admonishes us to honour our parents (Exodus 20:12; Deuteronomy 5:16) and do good to all men especially the members of our household (Galatians 6:10). It should be noted that in-laws are people related to us by marriage and we should deal with them with godly wisdom (James 3:17).

b. Avoid acting like strangers: Do well to let your in-laws see you as another child of theirs and not a stranger (Proverbs 18:24; John 15:15).
c. Avoid damaging rules: Make sure you avoid rules that can destroy the relationship with your in-laws (1Timothy 5:1-2). Be wise and all decisions relating to your in-laws, especially in speech (Psalms 34:13; Colossians 4:6).
d. Treat in-laws as important people and avoid strife (Philippians 2:3). Exhibit maturity and patience with in-laws (2Corinthians 6:4).
e. Remain humble and encourage mutual submission (1Peter 5:5; Ephesians 5:21). Always seek peace and pursue it (Psalm 34:14 Romans 12:18).

Answer: if either couples, say wife for instance, is proud and show arrogance to the husband’s parent; it could provoke separation or disaffection to the wife
ii. Teacher and student should discuss the remaining four points.
CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Why do you think some couples do not build cordial relationship with their in-laws?
LESSON OUTLINES 2: THE THIN LINE
A. In-laws too should show cordial relationship to their son-in-law and daughter-in-law using the following guidelines.
i. They should avoid external interference in the affairs of the couple and allow them build godly home. (Colossians 3:21; Matthew 19:4-6).
ii. They could give the couple counsel and support them with prayers without necessarily imposing their views. (Ephesians 6:4; Proverbs 11:14; Proverbs 19:20-21).
iii. They should allow the married couple takes their own decisions as responsible adults.
B. Teachers should ask students to explain why the in-laws should be guided with the above-stated points.
i. For instance, point number ‘3’ which states that couples should be allowed to take their own decision. This is essential beacuse it will enable them think deep before taking decisions knowing fully well that they would be held accountable for their mistakes.
ii. Teachers and students should discuss the remaining two points.
CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Why do you think some parents like to impose their views on their sons and daughters in-law?

*LESSON THIRTY-ONE (31)*
*TOPIC: HOLY “MATRI-MONEY” (PART 1)*
*BIBLE PASSAGE: Deuteronomy 28:1-13*
MEMORY VERSE: “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” 1 Timothy 6:10.
INTRODUCTION: Money is the major means of catering for our everyday needs and it is capable of meeting virtually all physical needs. One major reason couples get divorce is financial disagreement. This is very difficult to believe until one begins to feel the pool of financial tension in the home. Usually, the conflict may not appear to be directly about money but a closer look would reveal that the fight is about priorities, values, dreams, and trusts which are all linked with finances. The Bible cautions us about our attitude towards money. 1 Tim.6:10
OUTLINES:
1. OURS VERSUS YOURS AND MINE
2. HONESTY AND TRUST
1. OURS VERSUS YOURS AND MINE

ii. God wants his children to prosper. (3John 2; Ps.1:3).
iii. God gives his children power to get wealth. (Deut.8:18; Isa.45:3).
Question 2: Teacher should ask students this question. “Should husband or wife be the sole owner of money in marriage”?
Answer: No.

Answer: The spouse’s money belongs to the spouses (i.e. husband and wife) and the children.
Question 4: Why?
Answers: i. Because the husband and wife now becomes one flesh and nothing including money should separate them. (Matt.19:4-6; Eph.5:29-32; Gen.2:4).
ii. Married people have expanded responsibilities.
iii. Financial policy should therefore change from “mine” to “ours”.
CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Why do you think some men or women take the ownership of money in their families?
2. HONESTY AND TRUST
Teacher should explain the following points:
i. Trust and honesty are essential in family finances. (1Cor.13:7).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Why do you think spouse withholds spending information from the partner?
SUMMARY: What God has joined together, money should not put asunder.
CONCLUSION: Money, if rightly handled and managed in marriage, will act as a lubricant to the overall success of the marriage. However, the mishandling or mismanagement of money -which is a principal evil (1Tim.6:10), will wreck the home and could be the root of a broken marriage.

INTRODUCTION: Most of us have strong feelings about money. Some people hoard it while others are carelessly generous. Some invest conservatively while others take great risks. The influence of our parents as well as our past experiences with money (before marriage), play a significant role in our behaviour towards money. Often, these factors create strain and tension in marriage. Remember, you are different from your spouse.

INTRODUCTION: While there are many paths to success, not all of them are ethical or recommended for a Christian business owner because the way you define success is probably different from the way a non-believer defines it. To build a successful business, you must know the biblical principles for business success so that you can use them to achieve your business goals to the glory of God.
LESSON OUTLINES:
1. BIBLICAL BUSINESS PRINCIPLES
2. CAUTIONS FOR CHRISTIAN BUSINESS OWNERS
LESSON OUTLINES 1: BIBLICAL BUSINESS PRINCIPLES
i. Principle No 1: God owns it all. As a business owner, it is easy to think you are the boss and everything you own belongs to you. Knowing God owns it all, you will strive to do everything for His glory and shun business practices and ethics that are not pleasing to God. (Hag.2:8; Ps.50:10; Deut.8:18). See your business as a means to further the gospel and the kingdom of God. Use it as a platform to witness to others.
ii. Principle No 2: Be a Value-Giver: We should create great products and services that we would gladly purchase ourselves. (Ex.28:6; Ex.31:4; Rom.12:11). Being excellent at what we do is a fantastic way to honour God and to love our neighbours. Do unto others as you want them to do to you. Matt.7:12.
iii. Principle No 3: Take action and work hard. Do not just talk about starting a business, or changing your current marketing strategy, take action. (Prov.12:24; Prov.22:29). Also, do not just complain about something when it is not working well. Go and fix it. If you are trying to reach financial independence through starting a business, working hard will help propel you towards that. (Prov. 10:4,14).
iv. Principle No 4: Wisdom. You need wisdom to make the right decisions for your business, so you can avoid making irreversible or costly mistakes. James 1:5. Do not be afraid to pray for wisdom or be too proud to seek God’s direction for your business. (Prov. 4:7; Ps.37:23).
v. Principle No 5: Humility. To relate well with people especially clients or customers, you must remain humble and approachable. (Prov.11:2; James 4:6).
vi. Principle No 6: The right business skills. To grow your business, you have to be skilful. (2 Chron.2:8). Thankfully, it is possible to learn new skills, so there is no reason not to acquire the skills required.
vii. Principle No 7: The right tools and resources. For example, are there tools that can increase your productivity? Do you need a website to reach more people? Do you need to invest in some business technology? These are the types of questions you should ask yourself from time to time if you want to keep growing your business. (Prov.18:15).
viii. Principle No 8: Make money honestly: Do not cheat, lie to, or scam people out of their money. Build up your business little by little. (Prov.13:11). Do not be greedy of gain.
ix. Principle No 9: Be bold and get ready to meet with people of like passion. You need to relate with people in similar business and from other walks of life, various societal status/class, etc. you should be articulate in your presentations and negotiations. (Prov.28:1; Eccl. 8:1; 2 Tim.1:7).
CLASS ACTIVITY 1:
i. Teacher should enumerate the nine (9) principles stated above.
ii. Teacher should open floor for discussion of each point by giving each point to a student or group of students to discuss on why each principle should be adhered to.
iii. Teacher should give one minute each for each student or group to discuss their principles.
LESSON OUTLINE 2: CAUTIONS FOR CHRISTIAN BUSINESS OWNERS
i. Do not allow your business to become idol. (Luke 12:16-21).
ii. Do not serve mammon in the place of God. (Luke 16:13).
iii. Do not neglect your family and friend for your business. (Prov. 18:24).
iv. Do not jeopardize your health because of your business. Avoid plunging into sorrow. (1Tim. 6:10).
v. Do not neglect God for your business. (Prov. 10:22).
vi. Keep God first in your business. (Prov. 10:22).
vii. Avoid selfishness, sinful practice and disorderliness. (1 Cor. 14:40).

*LESSON THIRTY SIX (36)*

*TOPIC: BRIDGING MARITAL GAPS*
*BIBLE PASSAGE: 1 Corinthians 7:1-40*
MEMORY VERSE: “Neither give place to the devil” Ephesians 4:27.
INTRODUCTION: God is the author of marriage (Gen.2:24) He designed it to bring glory to His name and also for man to enjoy. However many marriages today are not conforming to the will of God. Rather than bringing pleasure, many marriages are full of pains and tales of woes because of human choices made contrary to biblical blue prints. In this lesson we shall unravel some of the gaps prevalent in some marriages leading to unfaithfulness among couples.
LESSON OUTLINES:
1. FORMS OF MARITAL GAPS
2. SOME PRACTICAL WAYS TO BRIDGING THE GAPS
LESSON OUTLINE 1: FORMS OF MARITAL GAPS
i. Teacher should ask students to mention those factors which could bring gap between husband and wife.
ii. Teacher should explain the points in Outline 1 as stated below:
a. Locational gaps: Long periods of absence, whether travelling for work or serving in the military, greatly reduces the opportunities for couples to properly bond. Examples are the Portiphars (Gen.39:5-7) and the Uriahs (2Sam.11). Long-distance marriage is not ideal.
b. Emotional Gaps: The feeling of insecurity and loneliness, whether emotional, physical or sexual, can create a gap between couples. The search for excitement to escape boredom and experiment with new things like adopting new hobbies or hanging out with new friends can affect the relationship between spouses.
c. Poor Boundaries: Poor personal boundaries, or the limits we place on other people as to what we find or unacceptable, can also result in marital gap.
d. Revenge: the desire to pay back the wrong doing of a partner in the ‘same coin’ can result in marital gap.
e. Sexual Gaps: Many partners in marital relationship are not enjoying sex or getting satisfaction sexually. They are only enduring and coping because their spouses are not sensitive to their sexual needs. Be it husband or wife, having an uninteresting sex life could put your relationship at risk of infidelity.
f. Financial Gaps: When the financial orientation of the couple differs and both parties fail to reach a compromise as to how money should be managed, there is bound to be conflict which may negatively affect the union.
g. Physical/Physiological Gaps: There are also situations where a couple do not pay attention to each other or do not like to go out together or have a passionate relationship, eventually, one or both of them look outside their relationship for someone whom they want to be with. (Mal.2:14-16).
h. Communication Gaps: communication is one of the most fundamental components of a successful relationship. If you cannot talk to your Spouse and listen to what he or she has to say, you will have a hard time making it through the difficult hurdles in your marriage. Not being able to share secrets, stories and feelings with their spouses can lead some people to open up to others emotionally.
i. Excessive use of the internet and social media: Connecting with other people and talking or chatting with them for hours at length at home, work or even in some public spaces at the expense of your spouse can extend the gap in your relationship.
CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Can you say marital gaps is increasing or decreasing in our societies?
LESSON OUTLINE 2. SOME PRACTICAL WAYS TO BRIDGING THE GAPS
i. Teacher should allow/encourage students who had experienced marital gaps before to share their experiences on how they were able to bridge the gap. They could also narrate their bitter plight during those periods.
ii. Teacher should explain the points as stated in Lesson Outline 2 below:
a. Avoid living separately in the name of job offer or searching for ‘greener pasture’.
b. Understand your spouse’s love language i.e. ask and do things that make them want to be with you the more e.g. holding of hands.
c. Go out together on dates; visit other families, friends and colleagues together.
d. Commend the good things your spouse does.
e. Condemn what is bad in love (not the person but the act) and apologize correctly. Give no room to the devil. (Eph. 4:27).
f. Handle matters discreetly and immediately.
g. Celebrate each other, exchange gifts regularly and create a conducive atmosphere for God’s presence in your homes. (Ps.133:1).
CLASS ACTIVITY 2:What role does communication gap play in marital gap?
