LESSON SIXTEEN (16)

TOPIC: BEAR FRUITS OF REPENTANCE

MEMORY VERSE: Matthew 3:8 “Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance”

BIBLE TEXT: Luke 3:3-14

3 – And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

4 – As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make His paths straight.

5 – Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;

6 – And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

7 – Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

8 – Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

9 – And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

10 – And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?

11 – He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.

12 – Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?

13 – And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.

14 – And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.

LESSON AIM: To let children demonstrate their repentance by their deeds.

CENTRAL TRUTH: Repentance leads to Holy Living.

INTRODUCTION: John the Baptist preached on repentance. Repentance is a change of mind from serving the devil to serving God. John the Baptist baptised people in the river Jordan as assign of repentance. After baptising them in the river Jordan, he commanded them to change from their old ways of sin to a holy life with God.

STUDY GUIDE:

A: WHAT REPENTANCE IS NOT:

1 Conviction of sin is not repentance. A sinner can be deeply convicted and still not repent. Acts 24:24-25

2 Sorrow of sin is not repentance. It is possible to be sorry for sin and yet not to repent of sin. 2 Corinthians 2:7

3 Hatred of sin is not repentance. Repentance includes hatred for sin but it is possible to hate sin and yet not turn from it.

4 Promising to be better is not repentance but taking steps.

B: WHAT IS REPENTANCE?

1 Repentance is a change of mind, feeling,  purpose and conduct. It is to leave the sins I loved before and to embrace a new life in Christ Jesus.

2 Confession of sin, contrition for sin and consecration to a new way of life.

3 Sorrow for sin and a determination to lead a holy life.

4 Turning away from sin and a turning toward God.

5 To turn to God and turn from evil.

C: HOW REPENTANCE IS BROUGHT ABOUT:

1 Repentance is a divine gift. Acts 5:30-31

2 Through the preaching of the gospel. Matthew 12:41

3 The goodness of God leads to repentance. Romans 2:4

4 The sorrow of life brings people to repentance. Psalm 78:34

5 The emptiness of life makes some to repent. Luke 15:17

D: EVIDENCE OF REPENTANCE:

1 Bearing the fruit of the Holy Spirit.  Galatians 5:22-23

2 Truthfulness. Luke 3:13

3 Not doing violence to people. Luke 3:14

4 Not accusing people falsely.  Luke 3:14

5 Contentment with ones wages. 1 Timothy 6:6

6 Obedience to the word of God. Romans 6:16

E: BIBLICAL EXAMPLES OF REPENTANCE:

1 The prodigal son.  Luke 15:18-20

2 The tax collector.  Luke 18:13

3 City of Nineveh. Jonah 3:6-8

4 Apostle Paul.  Acts 9:6, Acts 9:20

CONCLUSION: Living a holy and godly life is the only sign of a repentant heart. First you need to give your life to Christ. Now is the time to repent. 2 Peter 3:9 RCCG JUNIOR ZEAL SUNDAY 16TH OF DECEMBER 2020 (AGES: 9-12) TEACHER’S MANUAL
