TOPIC: ELIEZER FINDS A WIFE FOR ISAAC

BIBLE TEXT: Genesis 24

MEMORY VERSE

O Lord, God of my master Abraham, give me success today (Genesis 24:12, NIV).
TARGET:
To help the child see how God led Eliezer to find a wife for Isaac because he trusted Him.
OBJECTIVES:
During and after the lesson, each child will show that he or she understands the lesson by:
1. Telling the story of Eliezer’s journey to Mesopotamia.
2. Explaining why Isaac should not marry from Canaan.
3. Giving two lessons learnt from the story.
OUTLINE:
1. Abraham Sends His Servant – Gen 24:1-10
2. Rebekah Is Obtained – Gen 24:11-57
3. Isaac Marries Rebekah – Gen 24:58-66
INTRODUCTION:
God made Adam and Eve husband and wife when He created them. By so doing He instituted marriage. As believers, God wants us to marry when we grow up. But He warns us not to get married to boys and girls who are not Christians. Abraham did not want his son to marry from the heathen. God’s will is for us to marry Christians.
In this week’s lesson, we shall see how Abraham sent his servant to find a wife for his son, Isaac. The wife was sought for according to God’s will. Abraham’s servant prayed, Abraham also prayed. Every child of God must pray and seek God’s will in marriage when the time comes.
LESSON COMMENTARY:
1. Abraham Sends His Servant — Gen 24:1-10
When Isaac, the son of Abraham, was old enough to marry, Abraham sent his servants to get a wife for Isaac. But not from the land of Canaan where he lived. This was because the people of Canaan did not love the Lord as he did. They worshipped idols. So Abraham made his servant promise him that he would never get a wife for Isaac from Canaan.
Abraham then told him to go to the country he (Abraham) had come from and find a wife for Isaac. That would be a very long journey indeed. Abraham also told the servant that the girl whom he would find must be willing to leave her home and people and come to Canaan to live with Isaac. He also assured him that God will send His angel before him to guide him.
The servant took several camels, supplies, and gifts and went on the journey. On arriving to Abraham’s home country, he stopped at a well and prayed to God. He asked the Lord to guide him and make him find the right wife for Isaac. As he stood at the well, he believed God that any girl that would offer to give water to him and his camels was the person God would want Isaac to marry.
God heard his prayer. A girl called Rebekah came to fetch water. The servant asked for water from her. She gave him a drink and fetched water for all the camels too.
2. Rebekah Is Obtained – Gen 24:11-57
Abraham’s servant knew that Rebekah was the wife God had chosen for Isaac. He asked her whose daughter she was. She told him and he was happy. God had led him to the family of his master Abraham. He bowed his head and thanked God. Abraham’s servant then went to the girl’s family.
They welcomed him well. He then made it known to them that his master Abraham had sent him to look for a wife for his son. He narrated how the Lord had led him to Rebekah their daughter to become Isaac’s wife. God moved Rebekah’s father, mother and brother to accept that Rebekah would become Isaac’s wife. The servant gave them gifts as expression of love. They all ate together. Marriages in those days were planned by parents. So Rebekah had not been asked what she thought about the whole thing.
Early the next morning, Abraham’s servant wanted to go back with Rebekah. But the family wanted Rebekah to stay with them for at least ten days. Abraham’s servant did not like that. He wanted to leave immediately. So they decided to ask Rebekah whether she would go with the man. She said yes. So Rebekah took some of her maids and they left for Canaan.
3. Isaac Marries Rebekah – Gen 24:56-66
When the servant arrived with Rebekah and her girls, Isaac was in the field meditating. Rebekah saw him from afar, came down from the camel, and covered her face with a veil (cloth). This was a sign of respect and humility, Isaac welcomed her and they became husband and wife.
The lesson of today teaches us that when we grow up to marry, we should marry only fellow Christians. This is the will of God for His children. We have to pray and ask the Holy Spirit to guide us. The same Spirit that helped Abraham’s servant will also help us.
One of these days, there will be a wedding between Christ and the church. All believers will then be married to Christ. Pray for boys and girts who have not believed. Let us ask God to bring them to come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour.
APPLICATION:
It was Esther’s wedding day. The guests were all seated In the church. They were waiting for her to match in with her maids. She was dressed in a beautiful white gown that reached her ankles. The veil on her head covered her face. Esther was very happy because she had done God’s will.
Suddenly, she remembered the day God delivered her from making a big mistake. A man had come to ask her to be his wife. The man attended church but he was not saved. He still lived in sin and some people knew about It. Esther also knew about it. Esther did not know what to do. So she prayed that God will help her. God brought to her mind the story of Isaac and Rebekah. Abraham did not want his son to marry from the heathen. So he sent his servant to his people and from there they married Rebekah.
So Esther made up her mind that she was not going to start a family with someone who did not live right. And so she told the man no. Before long God brought another young man to her. He was a faithful believer. And she agreed to be his wife.
Today, they are being married as husband and wife in the Lord.
