BASIC SCRIPTURE: JOHN 14:1-7

14 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.

Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.

John 14:1-7 is a well-known passage from the New Testament of the Bible. It’s a conversation between Jesus and His disciples, where He offers comfort, guidance, and reveals His identity as the way to God. This passage is often quoted for its profound message of faith, hope, and the exclusive role of Jesus in leading believers to the Father.

Here’s a breakdown of the verses:

Verse 1: “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.” Jesus begins by comforting His disciples, encouraging them not to be troubled or anxious. He urges them to trust in God and also in Him, emphasizing the unity of their faith.

Verse 2: “In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.” Jesus reassures His disciples that there is a place for them in God’s heavenly dwelling. He is going to prepare a place for them there, underscoring the idea of eternal life and a future with God.

Verse 3: “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” Here, Jesus promises that He will return to bring His followers to Himself in the heavenly realm, emphasizing the personal nature of His relationship with them.

Verse 4: “And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.” Jesus indicates that His disciples already know where He is going and the way to get there, but Thomas expresses uncertainty.

Verse 5: “Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?” Thomas voices his confusion, not understanding the way that Jesus is talking about.

Verse 6: “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” In this pivotal statement, Jesus reveals His unique role. He declares Himself to be the exclusive way to God, the embodiment of truth, and the source of eternal life. This verse underscores the core Christian belief that salvation and access to God the Father are possible only through faith in Jesus.

Verse 7: “If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.” Jesus explains that knowing Him is tantamount to knowing the Father, as He and the Father are one. He asserts that by knowing Jesus, His disciples have gained knowledge of the Father.

This passage carries deep theological significance, highlighting Jesus’ identity as the mediator between humanity and God. It speaks to the inseparable connection between faith in Jesus and access to God’s presence.
