INTRODUCTION:

Every person at one time or the other in his life is posed with the challenge of making a choice – choosing to do good or bad, right or wrong, choosing between serving God or serving Satan. God never forces anyone to serve Him. When, a person decides to follow God and live for Him, it pleases God and He blesses such a person. Failure to do so brings His curse.
There is an important choice everyone must make in his or her life. We must choose whether to serve God or Satan. Everyone must make that choice, no matter who he is or what he is or where he lives. But the greatest mistake anyone can make in life is to reject God and His ways and follow other gods.
This week we shall see how Moses and Joshua found it necessary to choose to serve God rather than any other person or thing in their lives. Through their decisions to choose God’s way, they influenced many people and so pleased God.

1. MOSES CHOOSES TO IDENTIFY WITH THE ISRAELITES – EXO 2:11-15
In Bible days, one of the people that had to make a choice was Moses. He had to choose whether he would follow God and help his people who were being mistreated in Egypt by the Egyptians, or whether he would remain the son of Pharaoh’s daughter and forget he was an Israelite. Moses, however, decided to identify with his people, to take a stand of his own and do what he knew was right.
One day, he went over to see how his people, the Israelites, were getting on. On looking around, he saw an Egyptian beating an Israelite, Moses went over. He took a big risk, for, looking right and left and seeing that nobody was around, he killed the Egyptian and hid his body in the sand.
The next day he went back and saw two Israelites fighting. He went over and tried to make them stop fighting. But the man who was wrong asked Moses who made him a judge between them. He asked Moses if he wanted to kill him as he killed the Egyptian the other day.
When Moses saw that his act was now known, he ran away to Midian for his dear life.

2. MOSES CHOOSES TO RETURN TO EGYPT – EXODUS 4:18-20, 27-31
After many years in Midian, God appeared to Moses in form of a burning bush. He commanded Moses to go back to Egypt and help his people. Moses obeyed. He took his wife and two sons and went back to Egypt as God had commanded him.
While God was telling Moses to go back, He also told Aaron, Moses’ brother, to go into the desert and meet Moses. God made a thorough preparation for the return of Moses. Because Moses chose to serve God and obey Him, God blessed him personally and also used him to deliver the people of Israel from bondage. God does not use people who refuses to follow Him.
3. JOSHUA CHOOSES TO SERVE GOD – JOSHUA 24:14-28
Joshua was the man who took over from Moses. He, also, was involved in making an important choice. He had led the Israelites into Canaan. One day, as he was about to die, he called a meeting of the people of Israel. He first of all reminded them of the many things God had done for them. Then he told the people to make a choice. They had to choose whether they would serve the God of heaven who brought them out of Egypt or to serve the false gods of the Canaanites.
Joshua was determined to serve the God of heaven no matter what everyone else chose. So he told the Israelites that he and his family would serve the Lord.

APPLICATION:

We must decide whom we will serve, whether God or Satan. There is no trying to serve both of them at the same time for it will not work. In Christianity, there is nothing like being a partial Christian. We must choose between God and Satan. There is no excuse for refusing to serve God. In plain words, refusing to serve God is sin. And sin can never be excused but it can always be forgiven.
Serving God means hearing God’s Word and obeying it. It involves deciding against other gods and deciding for the true and living God. We can show that we have chosen to serve God by obeying His ‘instructions and commands and living for Him from day to day. Choosing to put God first in our lives puts us on the right path for we are either on one path or the other.
Choosing to serve God and live for Him is a choice we must make every day. The reason is that there will always be temptations to go back to our old ways.
