INTRODUCTION:

Do you know that people canget angry with you because you are a Christian, because you pray, because you go to church, because you don’t cheat at school, etc.? What will you do if someone puts you into trouble because of these things? Will you stop being a Christian or stop praying?
When Daniel was in Babylon, he served the true God. He was a great intercessor. He pleaded with God for His favour, mercy and forgiveness on his people. But he first of all confessed and acknowledged his sin and that of his people. The enemy, however did not want Daniel to pray at a time when he really needed to pray. He was determined to remain faithful to God even in the face of death. Every morning he talked to God in prayer. And because of his devotion, he prayed and received great revelation from God even though he was grossly mistreated. But he remained faithful and God gave him a great deliverance. LESSON COMMENTARY:

1. An Evil Plan is Made – Daniel 6:1-9
Though Daniel was in a foreign land, he remained faithful unto God. God kept promoting him. King Darius has just given Daniel a high position for his outstanding of work. And in his new position Daniel became the number one minister in the kingdom. The other leaders were not happy with him. They considered that he was a stranger. And they knew that the favour of God was upon him. They began envy him and to look for ways of removing him from his position. They spied on him hoping to catch him doing wrong. But they could not find any fault with Daniel except in the way he worshipped his God. They found out that he was a very faithful man and a man of prayer. So, they decided to use his faithfulness in prayer and other things against him.
These leaders went to the king and used flattery to trick him to make a decree they knew would be against Daniel. The decree was that, in the empire, all prayer should be made to the king for a period of thirty days. The penalty was that anyone who dared to pray to any other god or person for the whole period would be cast into a den of lions. This plan was just to stop Daniel from praying and to put him into trouble if he does. Jealousy is a terrible sin that should be avoided as serpent is avoided.
2. Daniel Continues to Pray – Daniel 6:10-17
When Daniel heard that a decree stopping people to pray had been signed, he went ahead and prayed as he used to do. Three times a day, with his windows open, he prayed to his God. He was not afraid of death. He was more interested in maintaining his relationship with God. Knowing his usual time and usual method of praying, his jealous accusers spied on him and caught him in the e act. They immediately went and told the king that Daniel had broken his order. It was then that the king knew that he had been tricked. He was sorry. He began to seek a way of delivering Daniel but the wicked men quickly reminded the king of the law of the Medes and Persians, that is, their law cannot be changed. So Daniel was cast into the den of lions. The king, however, told Daniel before he went in that, his God whom he served day and night would deliver him.

3. Daniel is Delivered – Daniel 6:18-28
The king went home and that night, he neither ate nor drank. He refused even to listen to any music and could not sleep. He was grieved because of Daniel. Daniel, however, was safe in the lion’s den. The lions did not hurt him. Early the next morning, King Darius hurried to the lion’s den. He called Daniel with a lamenting voice, asking whether his God whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions? And Daniel answered “My God sent an angel and shut the mouths of the lions so that they did not harm me”. King Darius was very happy. He ordered that Daniel be removed from the den instantly and that those men who accused Daniel be thrown to the lions.
The King then issued a decree that everybody should fear and worship the God of Daniel.

APPLICATION:

We should not underestimate the power of God to save or deliver. We should always pray in faith expecting God to answer us. Others may feel threatened and resentful when we do what the Bible says. We should not be unkind to them. Rather, we should go on doing what is right and God will surely help us.
In our lives as Christians, we may be tempted to stop doing some things we know are right, even when others disagree with us. Such things may include going to church, reading the Bible, praying, obeying God and our parents, being honest, etc. God wants us to be faithful, that is, to do right all the time even when doing right may get us into trouble. We should not let pressure from others stop us from doing what we know is right. We should be determined in our hearts and mind to please God. That is what steadfastness is.
