Memorise:

The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
— Ecclesiastes 1:9 (KJV)

Read: Hebrews 6:11-12 (KJV)

11 And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:
12 That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

RCCG Open Heaven 6 September 2026 Today Message by Pastor E.A. Adeboye

Today’s memory verse says that there is nothing new under the sun. This means that if you are trying to achieve something, someone else has achieved the same thing or something similar before. Therefore, if you study that person and follow the principles the fellow lived by and the steps he or she took, you should also achieve the same result. This is why you must make it a habit to learn from the people you admire and seek to emulate. When you study their lifestyles and actions and add your knowledge and experience to that, you will be positioned to achieve even greater things than they did.

I always tell my children who want to be like me, “While everyone is focusing on the glory, pay attention to the story.” God is not a respecter of persons (Acts 10:34); whatever He has done for me, He is ready to do for anyone if they follow the principles I follow.

When I became a Christian, I devoted quality time to studying the lives of the people who inspired me in the Bible, as I wanted to emulate them. For example, I spent three years studying Elijah. I loved Elijah because he was a man who could say a short prayer, and fire would fall. I loved his audacity and saw that the principles that powered his life were a devoted prayer altar and an unwavering focus on his God-given assignment. After studying Elijah for three years, I discovered Elisha, a man who possessed a double portion of Elijah’s spirit, and I shifted my focus to studying him for several years as well. I have also studied Paul because he was a scholar (Acts 22:3), and he was mightily anointed. Studying the lives of these men has shown me what I must do to remain eternally relevant in God’s plan.

Beloved, God has put numerous men and women in His word for you to study and emulate. Additionally, there are also people you can learn from in the present and in recent history. Don’t deprive yourself of the wealth of knowledge and wisdom you can glean from studying others. Learn from their successes and even their failures and mistakes so you can know how to avoid the same or similar errors. I pray that the Almighty God will point you towards great men and women you can learn from who will help you to fulfil your glorious destiny in Him, in Jesus’ name.

Key Point:
When you study others, you will glean and gather wisdom for living.

Bible in One Year:
Ezekiel 39-40

Hymn 33: Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah!

Verse 1:
Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah,
Pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but Thou art mighty,
Hold me with Thy powerful hand;
Bread of heaven, Bread of heaven,
Feed me till I want no more.

Verse 2:
Open now the crystal fountain,
Whence the healing stream doth flow;
Let the fire and cloudy pillar
Lead me all my journey through;
Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer,
Be Thou still my strength and shield.

Verse 3:
When I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside;
Death of death, and hell’s destruction,
Land me safe on Canaan’s side;
Songs of praises, songs of praises,
I will ever give to Thee.

Open Heaven Devotional 6 September 2026 Commentary

Theme: The Burden Bearer encourages you to learn from others. Those who have gone before you have already walked the path. Studying their successes and failures gives you wisdom for your journey.

Major Keywords: Learn from others, emulate the saints, Elijah and Elisha, biblical mentors, wisdom from history.

Commentary Summary:

  • Nothing is New Under the Sun: Whatever you are trying to achieve, someone has already done it. By studying them, you can follow the same principles and achieve the same or greater results.

  • Focus on the Story, Not Just the Glory: Daddy Adeboye advises not to just admire people’s success but to “pay attention to the story”—the principles, habits, and sacrifices behind their achievements.

  • Study Biblical Mentors: He spent three years studying Elijah, discovering his power came from a devoted prayer altar and unwavering focus. He then studied Elisha and Paul, learning from their lives to remain relevant in God’s plan.

  • Key Truth: God is not a respecter of persons. What He has done for others, He will do for you if you follow the same principles. Learn from both successes and mistakes to avoid pitfalls.

Reference to Theme: This message, LEARN FROM OTHERS, shows that wisdom is often found in the lives of those who have already succeeded. God has placed examples in Scripture and history for your instruction. Do not be too proud to learn.

Action Steps:

  1. Identify Your Models: Choose 2–3 people (from the Bible or real life) who have achieved what you desire in your walk with God or your career.

  2. Study the “Story”: Don’t just watch their current success. Read about their early days, their habits, and the principles they live by.

  3. Be Diligent: Like Hebrews 6:11-12 suggests, don’t be “slothful.” Be a diligent follower of those who inherited promises through faith and patience.
