RCCG Open Heavens 15 August 2026 Daily Devotional by Pastor E.A. Adeboye – THE WEIGHT OF COVENANTS II
Topic: THE WEIGHT OF COVENANTS II

Memorise:
Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:
— Exodus 19:5 (KJV)
Read: Matthew 11:28-30 (KJV)
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
RCCG Open Heavens 15 August 2026 Today Message by Pastor E.A. Adeboye
Holiness is living a life that reflects God’s character, and it is the major weight of a covenant with Him. Anyone who is in a covenant with God must be like Him (1 Peter 1:16), and this requires doing all that He asks. In return, the fellow will get many blessings from Him (Deuteronomy 28:1-14).
Some people think that life will become a bed of roses when they become believers; however, Jesus never promised that. In today’s Bible reading, He said that everyone who comes to Him should carry His yoke. This means that being a child of God does not mean that a fellow will not bear any weight of God’s covenant, only that the weight will be light and easy to carry with the help of the Holy Spirit.
Philippians 2:13 says: “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” God is willing and able to fulfil the terms of your covenant with Him if you allow Him.
When you enter into a covenant with God, you will no longer be permitted to do many of the things that unbelievers do. For them, those things may be right, but not for you. Paul said that although all things are lawful, not all things are expedient (1 Corinthians 10:23). Some people may argue that listening to worldly music is not a sin; however, for someone who has made a covenant with God, it is wrong. Some may dress seductively, but God will not approve of you dressing like that. You will get stricter instructions because of your covenant with God, but He will always empower you to obey Him.
The good news is that if you carry the weight of God’s covenant well, you will enjoy its fruits forever. God entered into a covenant with my Father in the Lord, Pa Josiah Akindayomi and gave him certain conditions, and in return, He said that He would start a church through him that would spread around the world. Thank God Pa Akindayomi met those conditions, and when he passed away, God proceeded to fulfil His part of the covenant.
Beloved, play your own part; carry the light yoke of God’s covenant of salvation and see Him move into action to fulfil His part of the covenant by showering you with His blessings. I pray that your life will be filled with God’s glorious blessings, in Jesus’ name.
Prayer Point:
Dear Father, please help me to carry the light yoke of your covenant willingly and joyfully. Help me to be holy as You are holy, in Jesus’ name.
Bible in One Year:
Jeremiah 37-39
Hymn 14: O What a Wonderful, Wonderful Day
Verse 1:
O what a wonderful, wonderful day,
Day of redemption, sweet and so gay;
Jesus my Savior came from above,
Filling my heart with His wonderful love.
Chorus:
O wonderful day! O wonderful day!
That Jesus washed my sins away;
He cleansed my soul and made me whole,
O what a wonderful, wonderful day.
Verse 2:
Now I am happy, happy and free,
Jesus has broken all my chains;
Satan no longer can trouble me,
Glory to Jesus, I’ll sing and proclaim.
(Chorus)
Verse 3:
Soon He is coming, coming for me,
Coming to take me home to be;
Where I shall see Him face to face,
And in His presence ever abide.
(Chorus)
Open Heavens Devotional 15 August 2026 Commentary
Theme: The Burden Bearer calls you to carry the weight of covenant—holiness—but promises that His yoke is easy and His burden is light. Covenantal life requires separation from the world, but God empowers you to obey and rewards you with abundant blessings.
Major Keywords: Weight of covenant, holiness, yoke of Christ, obedience, separation from the world, God empowers.
Commentary Summary:
-
Holiness is the Weight of Covenant: To be in covenant with God is to be like Him. 1 Peter 1:16 commands, “Be ye holy; for I am holy.” This weight is not optional—it is the condition for receiving His blessings.
-
The Yoke is Light, Not Easy: Jesus promises rest, but He also says “take my yoke.” The Christian life has a weight, but it is light because He carries it with you. The Holy Spirit empowers you to fulfill your part.
-
Separation from the World: In covenant with God, you can no longer do what unbelievers do. Worldly music, seductive dressing, and other compromises may not be “sin” to the world, but they dishonor your covenant. You live by a stricter standard, but God empowers you.
-
Faithfulness Brings Reward: Like Pa Akindayomi, who kept his part of the covenant and saw God build a global church, you will enjoy the fruits of your covenant if you carry its weight.
-
Key Truth: Your part of the covenant is holiness. God’s part is blessing. Carry the yoke willingly—it is light, and the reward is eternal.
Reference to Theme: This message, THE WEIGHT OF COVENANTS II, explains that the covenant with God requires you to live a holy life, separate from the world. But the yoke is not crushing—it is light because Christ bears it with you. Obey, and God will fulfill His promises.
Action Steps:
-
The Covenant Check: Are there any areas where you are living like the world while claiming to be in covenant with God? Identify them. Repent. Realign.
-
The Yoke Acceptance: Instead of complaining about the weight of holiness, embrace it. Say: “This is my covenant with God. I will carry it with His help.”
-
The Empowerment Prayer: Daily, ask the Holy Spirit to work in you to will and to do what pleases God. Do not rely on your own strength.
