INTRODUCTION:

When you were much younger, did you even have your father or mother or any other adult ask you to give back to him or her part of what such a person It may have been biscuit, sweet, meat, or even money? How did you feel? What did you do, it you remember?
A good way to show someone that you love him or her is to give the person something. It is a fact that one cannot love without giving even though one can give without loving. God demonstrated this fact by giving man the best gift ever His own Son. And one way man can show God that he loves Him is to give Him something.
God has given us many good gifts – life, air, food, water, parents, teachers, friends, health, gave you? you feel? money, etc.
This week we shall look at what God wants us to give Him and also look at how we are to give it.
1. GIVING TO GOD IS REQUIRED – MALACHI 3:6-9
Here God is saying that He is the Lord and does not change. And because of this, HIS people are not destroyed even though they have gone away from Him and His laws. He called on them to return to Him and they would not. He went on to say that the people were stealing from Him. This was because they were not giving Him their tithes and offerings.
God requires that His people give to Him. On the one hand, He demands a set amount of their money, and it is one-tenth of all their earnings. On the other hand, He people give Him what they want to give, that is, offerings. Offerings are to be given just because they love Him. An offering is not something that must be given to God like tithes, it is something given just because one wants to give it.
Because the people of Israel refused to pay their tithes and give their offerings, God placed a curse on them. He said that the whole nation was cursed with a curse because they robbed Him by not giving their tithes and offerings. Those who do not pay tithes are under a curse.

2. GIVING TO GOD BRINGS BLESSINGS – MALACHI 3:10

God called on His people to bring in all their tithes and offerings into His store. The reason He gave for asking for the people’s tithes and offerings is that there may be enough food in His house. God made a very serious statement here. He said that after obeying, they should try Him whether He would keep His Word or not. And what was His word? That He will open for them the windows of heaven and pour out blessings on them so much that there won’t be room enough to contain it all.
3. GIVING TO GOD IS SOWING AND REAPING – 2 CORINTHIANS 9:6
Giving tithes and offerings has to do with sowing and reaping. When one sows, one reaps. The way one sows is the way one reaps. What one reaps is in proportion to what one sows. God measures what is given.
Talking about giving in the New Testament, Paul said that one will reap the way one sows. Sow sparingly and reap sparingly. There are no two ways about it. It is both a natural and a spiritual law. The other side is also true. Sow plenty and reap plenty. That’s what the Word of God says.
4. GIVING TO GOD SHOULD BE DONE CHEERFULLY – 2 CORINTHIANS 9:7
This section and the verse talk about what the attitude of the person giving tithes and offerings should be when he is giving to God. People should give that which comes from their hearts, not what comes from the hearts of other people. In other words, giving to God should be done from the heart. According to Paul, God loves a cheerful giver.
Many people give to God grudgingly, their attitude is sour. Some others give out of necessity or duty. They don’t give because they want to but because they feel they have to give. Such people don’t give out of love. Jesus wants His people to give with a cheerful and loving attitude. When they do this, giving becomes a joy and not a burden.

APPLICATION:

One day I had to give some amount of money to a little girl. Soon after, she received biscuits from her mother. She held the money in one hand and the biscuit in another hand. I asked her to give me some of the biscuits and she refused even though she was still clutching at the money. Seeing she was not willing to give me some of the biscuits, I told her to give me back my money. Having no choice, she gave it back to me. Many of us are like that little girl.
God expects us to show love to Him. And one of the ways we can do this is by giving Him part of what He had given us. We can give Him our money. We don’t have to give Him all the money we get, but we should give Him at least a part of all that we earn and all that we receive as gifts.
God says that if we give Him “our tithes (one-tenth of everything) and our offerings(something more, just because we love Him), He will give us so many good things that we will not be able to hold them all”. This simply means that God will fill our lives with so many good things that we won’t know what to do with them all.
