1. Walking in the Light – 1 John 1:7
2. Confessing Our Sins – 1 John 1:8-10
3. Jesus Christ, Our Advocate – 1 John 2:1, 2.

INTRODUCTION:

Have you ever broken a rule at home or in school? What happened as a result? You were judged and disciplined, may be. It is not always a good experience to be judged and disciplined for breaking rules or laws. At times there is pain or there may be sadness, guilt and regret.
In the same way we can give in to temptation and ignore the guidelines God has given us in His Word for daily living. This means breaking God’s laws and when we do this, we sin. We can do this willingly and knowingly. When this is the.case, judgement follows, for when a law is broken, judgement comes.
But is it all over when we break God’s law or when we sin? No! There is a best way to do right to those we have wronged. That is what we shall find out from the lesson of this week. In other words, this week’s lesson tells us what to do when we yield to temptation and sin.

LESSON COMMENTARY:

1. WALKING IN THE LIGHT – 1 JOHN 1:7
John says that God is in the light and if we walk in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus cleanses us from every sin. Those are the two things that happen when believers walk in the light.
Jesus’ blood covers our sins when we ask for forgiveness. This is because Jesus Christ paid the death penalty for all our sins on the cross. God sees His blood in place of our sins and declares us ‘not guilty’.
Walking in the light means that those who believe in God live by His Word, that is, they obey Him. When light shines, darkness gives way. In fact, darkness will always give way to light. It cannot be found where light is because light drives it away.
Those who live without Christ are in darkness. They believe in dark powers. They hate, cheat, disobey their parents, fight with one another and disbelieve God. But those who walk in the light of God love God and are delighted to walk in His ways. They make sinners repent by living like Jesus and they live by the Word of God.
2. CONFESSING OUR SINS – 1 JOHN 1:8-10
The Word of God says that anyone who says he has no sin is a deceiver and a liar. Self-deception is the worst kind of deception because the person deceiving himself refuses to tell himself the truth. Such a person does not have Jesus, the Truth, living in him. The devil who is a liar and the father of liars, lives in him.
It is possible for a believer to fall into sin. Any child of God who knows that he has sinned in one way or the other should confess his sin and ask Jesus to forgive him. Confession of sin is the condition for forgiveness. Going and asking for forgiveness is the best way to do right to those we have wronged. When we go to God for forgiveness, He forgives for “He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
No person should claim to be sinless. To do that is to make God a liar. And such a person does not have the Word of God in him. Jesus Christ is the only One who lived a sinless life in this world. He is the only One, people should go to for their salvation.

3. JESUS CHRIST, OUR ADVOCATE -1 JOHN 2:1-2
It is not the will of God for us to sin. God wants us to follow His footsteps and not sin. But if it happens that any child of God sins, there is One who speaks to God in defence of His children. He is Jesus Christ, the righteous One. He becomes the Christian’s heavenly Lawyer and stands between him and God, the righteous Judge and pleads his case before God just as a lawyer does.
Jesus is the believers’ Advocate because He died in place of their sins. He also died for the sins of the whole world. He died for anyone that would come to Him for forgiveness and cleansing. He changes lives and makes one to become different from people of the world through living a righteous life.

APPLICATION:

The fellowship we have with one another involves loving our fellow brothers and sisters in the Lord. It also involves loving and praying for those who fight us and treat us badly. Having fellowship with others also involves living in peace with others and forgiving those who have wronged us. We should always listen to the Holy Spirit and let Him direct us to the right paths we should take.
Our memory verse tells us that when we sin or break God’s law, we have to admit it and confess it to Christ. We should be sincere and honest in the confession. When we do this, something happens – we are forgiven. But we do not need to go on sinning just because we know we can ask for forgiveness and get it. We should, rather, find out weak areas in our lives where we are failing God and ask Him to help us. Also when we discover that we have sinned, we should not claim to be righteous but rather go to God for forgiveness.
