INTRODUCING THE LESSON

AGN ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSONS 19 NOVEMBER 6 2022 UNIT 3: The Son Of God In The Gospel Of John

One of the most famous prayers of Jesus to His Father is recorded in John Chapter 17. Jesus’ heart is heavy with the ordeal that He is about to endure, as well as the trials and tribulations that will befall His followers afterward.
One thing is to teach how to pray and another vital thing is to know how to pray. Jesus took His time to teach His disciples on how to pray in Matthew 6. In John 17, He didn’t just teach how to pray, but He lifted His face unto Heaven to pray for Himself, His Disciples and as many that will follow Him in the future. Praise be to God that we are His present disciples and we should note that He had prayed for us and continued to intercede for us before His Father’s throne.
Jesus’ desire is for us to remain in His Words just like He had remained and kept the Words of His Father.
As believers, we are called to pray for one another. Standing in the gap for all believers in love and unity of purpose.

LESSON NUGGETS

✅️ Jesus knows that He will soon be taken from the disciples. He has been teaching them in preparation for this, and now He prays for Himself: “Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son so He can give glory back to you.” Jesus’ life on earth was to please and glorify His Father. Jesus has already brought glory to God by completing the work He was given to do-revealing God to people. Note that Jesus had glory with the Father before the world began. He left His glory in Heaven in order to bring humanity back to God. As disciples of Jesus this is our goal as well – whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
✅️ Jesus had glorified the Father during His earthly ministry by obeying the Father’s will. He affirms that everything that He has been given to do is completed as requested. He expresses a yearning to share in the fellowship of glorying with His Father. Jesus finished the work He came to do on earth and didn’t leave any halfway or uncompleted. To finish the word He handed over to us should be our great desire. Just like Paul declared: “I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful,” we too can stand boldly before Him as people that completed the divine work. May God grant us the grace and strength to persevere in the faith.
✅️ Jesus’ prayer shifted to His disciples. He fervently asks the Father to watch over them because they will be charged with continuing the work that He began. Furthermore, Jesus knew that they would be doing so in a world that would not be particularly receptive to their message and would sometimes even be downright hostile towards them. He understood the challenges that the disciples would face by living in the world without actually being worldly. He earnestly asked the Father to protect them and to keep the “evil one” away from them. Our security and protection are assured in Him.
✅️ “My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.” They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.” Jesus set Himself apart in order to devote Himself to the work of redemption. We follow Him in this devotion when we commit ourselves to the kingdom of God rather than live for the pleasures and priorities of this world.

✅️ Jesus prayed that His disciples would be protected from the evil one. Satan is at work in the world, sowing hatred for the things of God as well as His people. And yet, Jesus did not pray for His followers to disengage from the world. Rather, He prayed for their protection as they were sent out into the world. This should encourage us to share the gospel boldly and faith with those around us. Look for opportunities to do so this week. The great commission of taking the gospel to the world is a must do for us as believers and shouldn’t be afraid because Christ has prayed for us.
✅️ Jesus concludes His prayer by praying for those who would come to believe in Him by the words of His followers after He was gone. The main focus of this part of Jesus’ prayer is for unity on the part of believers to mirror the unity of Jesus with His Father. That prayer includes every believer throughout the Church Age. Jesus prays that the unity will be perfected within believers. God knows that we see a lot of imperfect unity. Often various Christian denominations feel superior to others. There is misunderstanding and resentment and pride and hurt. Within a city, smaller congregations sometimes act as if they are in competition with the larger churches. Within congregations there are sometimes factions, resentments that can have gone unresolved and unforgiven for decades. Oneness. Unity. That is what Jesus prays for. Father, we nullify any cause of church disunity in Jesus Name. Amen.
✅️ Jesus desires us to see Him in the glory the Father has given Him from before time. John 17:24 – “Father, I want these whom you’ve given me to be with me, so they can see my glory. You gave me the glory because you loved me even before the world began!”
The concept of the glory of the Father, seen in the Son, is repeated several times in Jesus’ prayer, and indeed throughout the Gospel of John(see John 11:40; 12:41; 15:8). These are mere glimpses of divine glory, but one day that glory will be seen clearly. Then, all believers will behold that glory in full.

Therefore He is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them(Hebrews 7:25). Jesus always makes intercession for His people. Praise the Lord for the intercession of Jesus Christ, our eternal high priest.
🙏Lesson Prayer Point🙏
Father, help us to find comfort in the compassion of Christ, and boldness as we approach God in prayer in Jesus Matchless Name. Amen!
