Jesus Can Help Us – Hebrews 2:18, 4:15
INTRODUCTION
Do you know what temptation is? Have you ever been tempted to do wrong, to lie, to steal, to cheat, to fight, etc? How did you feel and what did you do at the time?
Temptation comes to everybody regardless of gender and age. It is Satan’s way of getting us to do wrong.
Temptation is not wrong in itself, but it is giving in to temptation that is sin.
Temptation tries our faith but after it faith becomes stronger if the temptation one overcomes.
When Jesus lived on earth, He was tempted by the devil, as we shall study today. In the same way, all believers will be tempted.
No one is free from temptation. But God has promised believers that He will help them find a way of escape when temptation comes their way.
LESSON COMMENTARY
1. Turn Stones into Bread Matthew 4:1-4; Luke 4:1-4
Soon after Jesus was baptised, He went off alone to a desert.
All around Him were rocks and some wild animals. It was a lonely place. Jesus was there talking to God and planning His work. after fasting for forty days and forty nights, He became hungry, Satan came along and seeing how hungry and weak Jesus was, tempted Him to do evil.
Again and again the sly voice of Satan called softly to Jesus. It was trying to get Jesus to do something wrong. Satan knew that if Jesus did wrong, He would not be able to be the Saviour He came to be.
The temptation was that Satan challenged Jesus to turn stones into bread if He was really the Son of God. Even though the stomach of Jesus was aching because of hunger, He resisted Satan.
He recited to him the Scripture that says that it is not only by food that people should live. And with this, Satan stopped bothering Him about food. Jesus had won round one of the battle.
2. Jump off the Temple Matthew 4:5-7; Luke 4:9-13
Satan, however, would not give up. He immediately took Jesus to a high place above the courtyard of the Temple.
Down below was a crowd of people. Satan again challenged Jesus. He told Him to jump down from the top of the Temple if He was indeed the Son of God. He quoted to Him the portion of God’s Word which says that God would send His angels to keep Him from hurting Himself.
Jesus, however, knew that, that would be a foolish thing to do.
Jesus knew that jumping down into the courtyard without getting hurt would probably make the crowd there to believe He was the Son of God.
But He also knew that, that was not the plan of God for Him. So again, He quoted to Satan a Bible verse that says that one should not tempt the Lord his God. With that also, Satan stopped talking about jumping off the Temple. Jesus had also won the second round of the fight. But Satan was not tired yet.
3. Bow Down and Worship Matthew 4:8-11; Luke 4:5-8
Satan then took Jesus to a high mountain from where Jesus could see the beautiful things of the world. He told Jesus that he would give all He had seen to Him if He would just kneel down and worship him.
What an insult. Satan’s voice urged Jesus to do it. Spoiling God’s plan was very important to him.
Jesus knew that it was God who owned this world. He also knew that only God should be worshipped. Satan had overstepped the bounds.
This time, Jesus could take it no longer. With a stern voice, He ordered Satan to get off telling him a Scripture verse that says that God is the only One to be worshipped and served.
With this, Satan disappeared. He had seen that he could not get Jesus to do anything wrong. God now sent angels and they came and ministered to Jesus. Jesus had won the final battle.
4. Jesus Can Help Us Hebrews 2:18;4:15
Jesus suffered and was tempted when He was on earth. He knows what it means to be tempted.
And as a result, He can help all that are tempted. He is the High Priest with a difference.
He is not the kind of High Priest that cannot sympathise with the weaknesses of the people He is representing.
And though He was tempted in every way as we are tempted, yet He did not sin. So we too can overcome through the help He gives.

APPLICATION

Satan tempts us to do wrong.
He does not want us to serve God. He tries hard to get us to do wrong. He tempts us to sin by causing us to notice something attractive about wrongdoing.
But we don’t have to obey him. We need to know how to answer Satan from God’s Word.
When we are tempted we should think of Bible verses to use against the temptation.
God’s Word is a powerful weapon against evil. The more we know of the Bible and the more we obey it, the more Jesus can help us use it to keep us from doing wrong.
When we pray and ask God for help, He can help us remember Bible verses we have memorised that will make us stronger. He can also give us courage to be strong and do what we know is right.
