The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) is known for its annual 50 days fasting and prayer period. Fasting is a spiritual discipline observed by many Christians, and it can be a time of seeking God’s presence, guidance, and intervention. Here are some Bible verses that highlight the benefits of fasting:
- Matthew 6:16-18 (NIV):
“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have their reward. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
This verse emphasizes the importance of sincerity and the promise of reward from God during fasting.
- Isaiah 58:6-9 (NIV):
“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.”
This passage highlights the social justice aspects of fasting and the blessings that come with it.
- Joel 2:12 (NIV):
“Even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.”
Fasting is linked here with a sincere return to God.
- Acts 13:2-3 (NIV):
“While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’ So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.”
This verse shows fasting as a part of seeking God’s guidance and direction in making important decisions.
It’s important to note that the benefits of fasting are not only physical but also spiritual. Fasting is a way to draw closer to God, seek His will, and experience spiritual growth. Before embarking on a fast, it’s advisable to seek guidance from spiritual leaders and approach it with a sincere heart.
