LESSON TWENTY FOUR (24)

TOPIC: GENTLENESS AND SELF-CONTROL

BIBLE TEXT: Genesis 37:2, 39:1-23.
LESSON AIM: Gentleness and self-control are fruits of the Spirit.
MEMORY VERSE: Galatians 5:23 Meekness, Temperance: against such there is no law
.
INTRODUCTION: Gentleness and self-control is closely related and are both Fruit of the Spirit Galatians 5, Moses the mediator of the Old Covenant was a meek man Numbers 12:3 and our New Covenant mediator Jesus Christ called Himself gentle and lowly in heart Mathew 11:29. Seeing these Biblical examples we can say that gentleness and self control equipped them for their respective roles as we will see further in the life of Joseph in our lesson today.
Be gentle and have self- control!
PROGRESSION OF EVENTS
A. When Joseph was seventeen years old, he; brought bad report of his brothers to his Father Gen. 37:2
Joseph brothers were not well behaved, but he did not approve of their behavior, so he reported to his father Jacob.
Bad behavior is sin, what is sin?
B. Now Israel (Jacob) loved Joseph more than all his children because he was the son of his old age. Also he made him a tunic of many colours. vs. 37:3
C. But when his brothers saw that their father loved him and could not speak peaceably to him. vs 37: 4 Joseph’s brother sold him as a slave boy to Potiphar. The Lord made Joseph successful in Potiphar’s house Gen 39: 2,3
D. Potiphar promoted him as a ruler in his house hold and trusted him with all he had. 39 vs. 4-6
E. Potiphar’s wife thought Joseph was good-looking and wanted him to love her 39 vs. 7
F. Joseph refused to do this great wickedness and sin against God 39 vs. 8,9. Joseph knows God is holy and hates sin. He hates the wrong things you do.
G. Joseph resisted but Potiphar’s wife continued to tempt him. 39 vs.10 Joseph was able to resist her because he has self control. One day as he was working in the house Potiphar’s wife wanted to tempt him to do wrong with her, but Joseph slipped out of his coat and ran out of the house. 39 vs. 11, 12 (Joseph resisted her pressure of sin due to his self-control)
H. Potiphar’s wife lashed out on Joseph by lying against him to the men of the house. 39 vs. 13-15
I. Angry Potiphar stripped Joseph of his position and threw him into prison for something he did not do. Gen. 39 vs. 20
CLIMAX: God was with Joseph even in the prison and honored him for saying “No” to sin.
CONCLUSION: God gave Joseph favor in the sight of the prison keeper, and he was given charge over the prison, even there, God prospered him for doing the right thing.
CHALLENGE: Joseph’s gentleness made him of good behavior to earn his father’s love even though his brothers hated him and his self- control enabled him to resist the temptation of Potiphar’s wife.
God rewarded him greatly by being with him in Potiphar’s house and in the prison. He was favored and prospered. God wants you also to be gently and have self-control.
INVITATION: Roman 10:13.
