BIBLE TEXT: Matthew 20:25-28; Mark 9:35; John 13:1-17; Eph 6:5-8; 1 Peter 2:18
MEMORY VERSE:
Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, Matthew 20:26 (NIV).
TARGET:
To help the child understand that God wants him or her to serve others with a humble heart and that this is one way to minister with his or her life.

OBJECTIVES:

During and after the lesson, each child will show that he or she understands the lesson by:
1. Saying specific things he or she can do to serve someone within the week.
2. Praying that God will give him or her the willingness to serve others and to help him or her find ways of doing so.
OUTLINE:
1. Serving Others – The Secret of Greatness – Matthew 20:25-28/ Mark 9:35; Luke 22:25, 26
2. Jesus Demonstrates Serving Others – John 13:1-17
3. A Servant’s Attitudes and Actions – Ephesians 6:5-8; 1 Peter 2:18

INTRODUCTION:

We usually think of servants as people – who take care of other’s needs. We also tend to think that servants have to do unexciting, routine jobs and are ordered around by rich people. That may be right, but it is not the whole story. A chorus sung by some women years ago demonstrates what it means to be a servant. It says: Papa / mama, remember you are chief. This chief is not an army chief. God has said “anyone who will be chief must be one that serves others”.
Serving is a difficult lesson to learn; it goes against man’s nature. But God commands us to But serve. This week’s lesson helps us look at this aspect of the Christian’s life.

LESSON COMMENTARY:

1. SERVING OTHERS – THE SECRET OF GREATNESS – MATTHEW 20:25-28; MARK 9:35; LUKE 22:25, 26
“In this world, those who lord it over others and exercise authority are considered great men and women. But Jesus says that in the kingdom of God, greatness will not be measured by authority over others, but by giving one’s self in service. Believers must give their lives in helping others, and especially in labouring for the spiritual good of all people”.
Anyone who wants to be first must take the last position, and must be the servant of all. The greatest must be like the youngest; the first shall be the last. True greatness is an attitude of the heart that sincerely desires to live for God and others.
2. JESUS DEMONSTRATES SERVING OTHERS – JOHN 13:1-17
Jesus knew that the time had come for Him to leave the world. Satan had already put it in the mind of Judas Iscariot to betray Him. Wrapping a towel round His waist and preparing a basin of water, He began to wash the feet of His disciples. When Peter objected to Jesus washing his feet, Jesus insisted on washing Peter’s feet. Then Peter asked the Lord to wash not only his feet but also his hands and head.
When Jesus finished washing the feet of the disciples, He asked them whether they knew or understood what He has done. This was because He wanted to be sure that His disciples understood why He had washed their feet. By His action, He was showing His love and He was teaching them that if He, their Master was willing to humble Himself and be a servant by washing their feet, then they should be willing to be servants also and serve others.
3. A SERVANT’S ATTITUDES AND ACTIONS – EPHESIANS 6:5-8; 1 PETER 2:18
“A servant’s attitude makes a big difference in how he acts. Likewise, our actions stem from our attitudes” “God’s Word commands us to do every job we are given as if Jesus had asked us to do it. We should do our very best and try to have a cheerful, willing attitude.” A servant’s attitude ought to be humble, cheerful, and should bring honour to Jesus.
Servant should be obedient and do their work well whether their masters are there or not. They should respect and reverence their masters, be sincere, and serve them as if they are serving Christ himself.
A young person who serves God and others should always be at peace. He should not worry and be upset if things don’t work according to his plans. Rather, he should go to God in prayer concerning his problem and believe that God will take care of them. He should also let God into every decision he makes.
APPLICATION:
Our Memory Verse says that whoever desires to become great among us should be our servant. If we want to truly serve God, we will serve others with a humble heart. That’s what God wants us to do. But it is sometimes hard to serve others because we want to be served; we want our own rights. We also like to do important things so that others will see and reward us. But the truth is that we may not be noticed or thanked by anybody when we make Jesus our example in life, we won’t be too proud to do some jobs that may not look important.
Serving others is one way of witnessing for Christ. We can’t really serve others as we should if we are always thinking about ourselves or only about our wants and our needs. There are many ways we can serve others. And one of such ways is to pray for them.
Through the help of God, we can be faithful and humble servants who will point others to God through what we do and say.
